My Own Reiki Story

In about 1986 my wife read something about
Reiki, in which she recognised much of herself. Later she read
a book about Reiki. No great discovery but something that
fitted her own ideas. In 1991 she got her first degree from
Marjan van Staaveren. So I heard about Reiki through my wife.
I didn't know whether it would work or not, but I always felt
that there is more in a human than we think, that we have
powers that are suppressed and forgotten.
In the meanwhile I was a willing victim of the
exercises of my wife. I really felt the effect of Reiki. A
normal treatment starts with the head and ends with the feet.
The effect it had to me was a strong agitation or tension in
my legs and hands, that became stronger as the treatment
continued. It appeared as if the Reiki pushed something
forward that couldn't go further than my hands and feet. In
the middle of the treatment the feeling became so strong that
my wife had to "discharge" me. This discharging meant that she
moved her hands above my body from head to feet. I don't know
how it all works, but it does! It is said that it restores
your aura. I found the treatment very pleasant and relaxing.
I've always enjoyed it. The three of us (I have a son born in
1987) are quite healthy (we think so) so we didn't notice any
curing. When I had some trouble with my knees, I asked my wife
to give me Reiki, which certainly helped.
Considered the simple way you can learn Reiki,
the result was remarkable, but it fitted my ideas. Half a year
later I received my first degree with the same master. It was
(and is) very nice to do Reiki together and to be able to talk
about it. It was something we had in common. And of course we
could exercise with each other. I find giving Reiki as
pleasant as receiving it. Sometimes you can feel where someone
has a problem (for example with back problems). It is
satisfying to hear that your feelings are right. What I also
can feel, certainly when I give Reiki to myself, are the
places of the chacras. At those places the Reiki flow is much
stronger. Furthermore I have the feeling that Reiki enhanced
my intuition, but you never know for sure weather it is caused
by the Reiki or by the general development you make,
considering that Reiki makes you more oriented to people.
What I disliked about my first degree initiation
was the importance that was given to money. For every Reiki
treatment there had to be some payment, by money or other
means, to ensure the patient realised the value of the
treatment. Love, power and money were considered as equal
forms of energy. This was very much in contradiction with my
ideas: Reiki is unconditional love, but you have to pay for
it! Much later I realised why I didn't agree with the equality
of love, power and money. Unfortunately I couldn't use that
argument in the group discussion anymore. In my point of view
the difference is that power and money are conserved and love
is not. That means that when I give power or money to someone,
I get less myself, but when I give love to someone it doesn't
cost me anything! Money and power can get lost or can be taken
away from me, but love can't. I can imagine that you want to
get paid for Reiki when you make your living of it, but the
way it was brought by the alliance didn't suit us. The problem
was not in the initiation itself, but in the philosophy of the
alliance. We practised at each other and at relatives and
other first degree Reiki colleagues.
I've got the impression that Reiki doesn't
primarily work at the body itself, but more at the
sub-consciousness or the spiritual part of the body. This
explains the results that are made at psychological and
psychosomatic problems. A difficulty in this is that the
mental cause of a problem is not always clear. The mental
effects of Reiki are well illustrated by the treatment of a
relative by my wife: A relative had the
problem that she always woke up at 4 o'clock in the night with
a panicle fear and couldn't go back to sleep. She didn't know
what she was afraid of, or where it came from. One day she
asked my wife whether Reiki could help her. My wife gave her
one treatment and that night she kept asleep on for the first
time in years. The effect stayed for a few days. After that
she woke up again, but she had no problem with it and could go
back to sleep.
Somewhat later my wife got her second degree at
a master who was not connected to the alliance. I was just
waiting to get my second degree too. The second degree gives
you the possibility to use three symbols and mantras which
have the following effects:
The first symbol makes your Reiki stronger so
that you only need a quarter of the time for a Reiki
treatment.
The second symbol gives you the possibility to
contact the sub-consciousness of the person you treat. This
enables you (if the patient wants you to) to give suggestions.
For example when someone wants to stop smoking. You are not
allowed to give more than suggestions, because the personal
freedom of the patient must (and will) always be protected.
Misuse of Reiki isn't possible, because Reiki will only work
when the patient wants it. Sometimes a patient thinks he wants
to be treated, but the treatment doesn't work because he
unconsciously enjoys the attention he gets as a patient. The
sub-consciousness can use the illness as a way to get
attention.
The third symbol gives you the possibility to
work at a distance. This distance is unlimited, we have good
personal experiences at a distance up to 200 km. Of course you
could explain the effects with the knowledge that somebody is
paying attention to your problems, but there are effects that
can't be explained by that. I will mention three experiences,
the first of them by a colleague of my wife:
That colleague had treated a little boy in
Poland when she visited him there. Later she treated him from
her home in Holland. At the same moment the boy told his
mother that "the woman with the warm hands" was with him. He
didn't know he was treated from a distance, so suggestion was
not possible.
We treated a person at a distance of 200 km who
had severe back problems. We could cure the symptoms of his
problem quite effectively, but not the problem itself. Later
he appeared to have a decease that caused the problems to
return. It was nice to be able to give him relieve when he
needed it.
A girlfriend I only knew from a chat-box, wanted
to experience a distance treatment. When I asked her whether
she had any specific problems, she told me she couldn't sleep
very well. I gave her three treatments and when I talked to
her again a week later, she "complained" that she had slept
till 4 o'clock PM for 4 days in a row! She missed some college
lectures by it! Her girlfriend asked me whether I could "wake
her up again"... Apparently she needed the extra sleep. In
this case I was surprised by the way Reiki "found" her, I only
knew her name and the place she lived in!
These experiences made me think that Reiki can
indeed work at a distance, but I don't experience very much
when give a treatment. My wife feels a warm "flow" from her
shoulders along her back.
Well, that's about my Reiki story! I would like
to emphasise that Reiki is important to me, but it doesn't
change my life or my way of life. I've chosen my chat-name
ReikiHugo to tell something about myself and to get nice chats
about it. So Reiki fits to me, rather than that it has changed
me.
I hope to get lots of reactions and hear the
story of other Reiki colleagues and of people who received
Reiki treatments.
